about

Our relationship with reality.
And what we do when reality becomes inconvenient.

The stories we tell ourselves.
What our behavior says instead.

The explanations we construct.
The decisions we postpone.
The things we know but don't act on.

And the things we think we know about ourselves that may not be quite as settled as they seem.

the explanation

You know the one.

The convincing account of why things are the way they are.

It gives the past a reason,
the present an explanation,
and the future a justification for staying exactly where it is.

And explanations are powerful.

They can change how we understand reality.

They can make it more coherent.
More tolerable.
More reasonable.

They just can't make reality cooperate.

Eventually, reality answers.

Not as an argument.
Not as a judgement.

Just as a consequence of what we keep doing.

My name is Aida Uzunovic

Before writing became the centre of my work, I spent years working one-to-one with people in psychological and coaching work, and later in behavioral and SEN learning support.

Today, I write about the collision between perfectly reasonable explanations and embarrassingly persistent reality.

The stories we use to understand ourselves.
The things we know but don't act on.

And the things we are certain we know about ourselves
but perhaps haven't questioned in a very long time.

Insight is useful.

Unfortunately, reality has an irritating preference for behavior.
